The car coat is a very distinctive raincoat, created in the early 20th century as a comfortable garment to wear in the car. At the time, cars were open-topped, and a garment was needed that could protect the driver and their clothes from dust and moisture. The car coat differs from a raincoat in that it is much shorter, allowing for a comfortable seat. The garment has a slim fit and set-in sleeves, and the hidden buttoning betrays its English origins. It features two raincoat pockets, slanted at the sides, and two inside pockets. The garment is unlined and finished with cotton ribbons.
